Like buying a classic car, tweaking a classic sandwich just makes it better. When Champagne French Bakery decided to bring back its Original Croque Monsieur, it was just a matter of staying true to tradition, but with a little something extra. The decadent sandwich is made with sliced Black Forest ham, Swiss cheese and creamy béchamel sauce, served between two buttered slices of pain de mie. It’s topped with a mild grated Swiss cheese, then oven-baked to create a flavorful crust.
“This rich and creamy sandwich is a knife-and-fork dish that will leave you full and smiling,” says Mary McVoy, Concept Chef and Food & Beverage Manager. “At Champagne, we like to add a few hidden spices to our béchamel sauce to really bring the sandwich to life. We put a lot of hard work into each sandwich to make sure it has a bold and crispy crust with a warm and creamy center.”
Added twists include topping the sandwich with a fried egg, which transforms it into a Croque Madame, or pairing it with a fresh side of spring mix and the house French curry vinaigrette for a flavor-forward variation.
“We have had such positive response to bringing back an old classic to our menu,” says McVoy. “We look forward to bringing back some other classics down the road as well.”
